- Tarawa writes that Māori have needlessly paid huge amounts of money to Local Rating Authorities, not knowing that Māori customary land is exempt from rating charges because it is ‘Sovereign Māori Land’. Tarawa adds that because some Māori Chiefs refused to sign the Treaty of Waitangi they therefore were outside the jurisdiction of the New Zealand judicial system.
