Jock Taua

In the 1972 and 1978 Eastern Māori Electoral Rolls, Taua is recorded as living in Te Whetu and being employed as a timber worker.

  • Taua asserts that Māori have a preference for body contact sports such as football, basketball, boxing and wrestling, which he states is ‘an inherent trait with a warrior-like people who developed special skills in hand to hand or close combat.’ He discusses key Māori sportspersons in Auckland competing in league football, basketball, swimming, athletics and tennis and notes that Ruia Morrison is the first Māori competitor at Wimbleton.
