Turia has worked as a Southern Regional Co-ordinator for Māori Access training programmes; worked in Māori Affairs Head Office; was Chief Executive of Te Oraganui Iwi Health Authority, Manager of Whanganui Regional Developemnt Board Trust in 1989, Manager of Whaioranga Iwi Social Services Unity in 1991, and was a Service broker for Te Puni Kokiri Whanganui Office from She was a Labour member of Parliament from 12 Oct. 1996 until her resignation on 17 May 2004. She was a Founding member of the Māori Party and is currently Member of Parliament for Te Tai Hauauru and Co-Leader of the Māori Party.
