'Emma Hislop grew up in the Far North, first in Totara North on the Whangaroa Harbour, and then further north in Pukenui, on the Aupōuri Peninsula; she now lives in Taranaki. Her fiction has appeared in Huia Short Stories 14 (2021); in the USA magazine Action Spectacular; in New Zealand journals including Ika, Ora Nui, Sport and takahē; and on the Newsroom site. A 2013 graduate of the MA in Creative Writing programme at the International Institute of Modern Letters, Hislop was awarded the 2021 Creative New Zealand Louis Johnson New Writers' Bursary. Her first collection of short fiction, Ruin, was published in 2023, and includes the story, 'Scarce Objects',
