Murray Dick was born at Kenuaparu in Wellington and educated at Kura Street Primary School, Titahi Bay Intermediate and Mana College in Porirua. He studied at Paramoana Community Polytechnic and has a Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Trade Certificate. He has worked in the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Trade. He wrote "Talking with Hemi" at the age of sixteen while still a student at Mana College. He has travelled overseas, lived in Britain and currently lives in Australia.
