Henare Everitt was born in Te Kao, north of Kaitaia, and was educated at Te Kao District High School and St Stephen’s School. From 1959-1960 he attended Wellington Teachers’ College and then worked as a teacher at Ratana School from 1964-1971, and was principal of Mohaka School from Everitt subsequently left teaching and began free-lance work producing teaching material for Māori language study. From 1984-1985 he was a Public Relations Officer in Māori Affairs in Wellington and in 1986 he worked as an Editor with the School Publications Branch which is now called Learning Media Limited. In 1987-88 he undertook Tohu Māori and B.A. studies at Victoria University. He also held the position of Senior Editor of the Māori Productions Unit, Group Learning Media. He has published non-fiction articles in the Listener, Airways Media Magazines and has written a large number of Māori readers for Price Milburn and Learning Media.
