Katie was born in Invercargill and attended Newfield Primary School, Tweedsmuir Intermediate School and James Hargest High. She continued her studies at Dunedin College of Education and Massey University graduating with B.Ed Tchg Bilingual. She is currently a primary school teacher at Riverton Primary School. Katie writes short stories and attended at Toi Māori writing workshop in 1998. Her interests include "kapa haka, traditional Māori art, literature, alternative music and contemporary art." She states: "I get inspiration for writing from lots of things but mainly a single word or feeling develops into a story. The idea for Shadow People came from an individual child who has a talent for speaking with his eyes".
