George Habib

Ngāti Tūwharetoa

1943 -

George Habib was born in Rotorua and educated at Oruanui Primary School and Taupo Nui A Tia Secondary School where he was head prefect in his last year. He attended the University of Canterbury and graduated in 1968 with B.Sc, in 1971 with M.Sc.,(1st Class Hons) and in 1975 with Ph.D in Zoology. From 1974-82 he was employed as a Fisheries Scientist by the Fisheries Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Wellington. In 1983 Habib established with others a joint venture fishing company called Purse Seiner Services. From 1984-87 he was a Senior Consultant/partner for Southpac Fisheries Consultants in Auckland, and Associate Consultant for ANZDEC Ltd. From 1988-89 he was Managing Director of Southpac Fisheries Consultants, Director of IKA Venture Corporations Ltd, Associate Consultant for ANZDEC Ltd and Aquatic Farms Ltd, Research Associate for the National Museum of New Zealand and Advisory Trustee for Pacific Development and Conservation Trust. Since 1990 Habib has been Managing Director of IKA Consultants Limited, and Director of IKA Aquaculture Ltd, IKA Venture Corporation Ltd, and Muriwhenua Fishing Company Ltd. He is Secretary of Nga Waka Fishing Company and Chair of the IKA Group. He is part of the Fisheries Committee of the National Māori Congress, Administrator of Māori Fishery Negotiators, and Advisory Trustee of Pacific Development and Conservation Trust. Habib is Committee Adviser for Taupo Fishery Advisory Committee. He is Scientific Adviser for Auckland Regional Water Board.
