Eru Hart was born in Hastings and attended Frimley Primary School, Heretaunga Intermediate and Karamu High School. He went on to study at Victoria University and Massey University and is currently completing a B.A. in English. He has worked in Countdown Supermarket, 3 Guys Supermarket and the Salvation Army’s Youth Services. In 2001, Hart was a finalist in the Māori Literature Awards for his short story "And I Said". In 2003, he was a finalist in E tuhi! Māori Writers Award for his short story "Firewater" and in 2005 he won the E tuhi! Māori Writers Award for his short story "Who Bore the Force". In 2004, he attended a Huia Publishers Novel Development hui at Hongoeka Marae led by Adrienne Jansen. In 2006 he participated in "Writing the Landscape" course at the Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University, convened by Dinah Hawken.
