Puhi is described as a hard-working woman who would boil up the copper and scrub all the family’s laundry by hand and who would tend all her children’s illnesses with various home-grown remedies. Later the family moved to Wellington and Puhi became very involved with the Māori Women’s Welfare League and was elected one of the league’s vice-presidents in 1955.
