Horiana was born and educated in Otaki. She is a teacher by profession and inclination. Horiana maintains that the greatest calling she ever had was to be a mother and grandmother. She is currently writing a thesis in Matauranga Māori at Te Wananga o Raukawa and is member of the Otaki Historical Society.
