She "was born in Taita, lives in New Plymouth and works in education. Mahina has family and friends whom she adores, and equally adored are life’s little ironies – she comments: ‘I love sun and light yet write darkly; I think circuitously et relish simplicity; am concerned about excellence but don’t believe in perfection.’ Mahina still dreams dreams of ‘being a writer’s writer, a great mum, competing across several codes in the NZ Masters Games, and doing a PhD.’"
