Marama Mateparae was born in Turangi and was educated at Aotea College. She attended the Journalism Course at Wellington Polytechnic and graduated with a Journalism Diploma. She wrote education articles for newspapers from 1986-87 and for the Evening Post from She has worked as a secretary for a computer firm in England.
