1953. Graham Nugent was born in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay and was educated at Opoutama Primary and Gisborne Boys’ High School. He continued his studies at the University of Canterbury and graduated with a B.Sc in Zoology and Chemistry in 1975 and an M.Sc in Zoology from the University of Auckland in 1981. From 1974 to 1979, he worked as a shepherd and sole-charge farm manager on several sheep and cattle hill country farms on the East Coast of New Zealand. He also worked for the New Zealand Forest Service in pest destruction and was a self-employed commercial deer hunter. From 1981-1992, he was an ecological researcher in the Forest Animal Ecology section of the Forest Research Institute; during that time he completed a comprehensive seven-year investigation of the recreational hunting of fallow deer and their impact in the Blue Mountains of Otago. Nugent has published nine papers from this research. Nugent also completed the only national survey of hunting in New Zealand; his research revealed the role of recreational hunters in regulating deer numbers. He conducted a series of major reviews for the Department of Conservation including an examination of management options concerning white-tailed deer on Stewart Island. From 1992 to the present, Nugent has worked for Landcare Research as a Research Team Leader for the Ecological Impacts Team and Weeds and Pests Group (1992-1996). From 1996-1998 he worked as Research Team and Programme Leader for the Pest Impacts and Management Team, Weeds and Pest Group. In 1991 Nugent was Treasurer of the New Zealand Ecological Society, and was council member of the Australasian Wildlife Management Society from He has memberships on the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association, Royal Forest and Bird Society, and of the DOC working party for the development of a national deer plan. Nugent writes scientific papers and management reports. His focus is primarily on the ecology, management and harvesting of introduced mammals such as deer and opossums.
