Putiputi Onekawa

Putiputi Onekawa was born in Maungapohatu, the eldest child of Rua and his second wife Pehirangi Kahuehi. From 1921-25 she was educated at schools in Maungapohatu and Matahi before spending a year at Turakina Māori Girls’ College. She married Mac and had thirteen children.

  • Onekawa talks of her childhood years at Maungapohatu. She recounts the story of her father, Rua, going to Te Rongopai on his white horse, Te Ia, and discusses his religious customs. Onekawa also describes her schooling at Turakina, her arranged marriage and her children. This oral account was recorded by Binney and Chaplain when they visited Putiputi Onekawa’s home on four separate occasions - 30 Jan 1983, 8 May 1984, 4 Dec 1984 and 24 Mar 1985.
