Toroa Pohatu has a Teacher’s College Diploma and was a lecturer in the Māori Department at Otago University in the 1990s. She has written book reviews and has delivered papers in bicultural education, Māori art and artists. She has written a song which was published in Nga Puke and another song which appears on Shona Rapira Davies’ sculptural piece in Wellington. With Godfrey Pohatu, she has taught courses on creative Māori writing for university students.
